The Pig That Grew and Grew
By: Jodi B.
Once upon a time there was a little girl named Hannah who loved pigs. She loved all kinds of pigs. Pink pigs, brown pigs, black pigs, poke-a-dotted pigs, stripped pigs, tall pigs, short pigs, long pigs and pot-bellied pigs.
One day Hannah and her Dad went to an Auction Sale where lots of pigs were being sold. Hannah looked around at all the pigs and one little pig really caught her eye. She had black and white spots on her back and her snout and the curliest pink tail Hannah had ever seen. The little pig kept looking at Hannah and was wagging her tail frantically trying to get her attention. As the pigs big brown eyes looked up at Hannah, she asked her Dad if they could buy the pig and take her home. So her Dad agreed and she watched him put her new pig into a small crate and they headed home in the truck.
That night Hannah went straight to the barn and fixed up a little box for the pig to sleep in. She called all her friends and family to come to the barn to see her new pet pig. Hannah was so excited and she named her new pet pig, Zelda. Hannah loved playing with Zelda and hated to come in from the barn when mom called for bedtime. Hannah could hardly wait for morning to see Zelda. But after lying awake for a long time, thinking about Zelda, she finally fell asleep.
The next morning, Hannah jumped out of bed and ran out to the barn to see Zelda! She opened the barn door and she could hardly believe her eyes! Zelda had grown out of her little box! “Mom! Dad!” called Hannah, “Zelda grew BIGGER!” Hannah’s mom, dad, sister and brother came running out to the barn and no one could believe their eyes! They all looked at Zelda from her head to her tail and BLINKED and BLINKED and BLINKED!! Hannah’s Dad said he has never seen a pig grow that quickly, especially not in one day. He said, “don’t worry we’ll just put her into a pig pen”. So, Hannah fed and played with Zelda all day, as usual.
The next morning, Hannah jumped out of bed and ran out to the barn to see Zelda! She opened the barn door and once more she could hardly believe her eyes! Zelda had grown right out of the pig pen! “Mom! Dad!” called Hannah, Zelda has grown BIGGER and BIGGER! Hannah’s mom, dad, sister and brother came running out to the barn and no one could believe their eyes! They all looked at Zelda from her head to her tail and BLINKED and BLINKED and BLINKED! Hannah’s Dad said, “don’t worry Zelda must have had a growth spurt, we’ll just move her into a horse stall.” So Hannah put Zelda into the horse stall and fed and played with Zelda all day, as usual.
The next day, Hannah jumped out of bed and ran out to the barn to see Zelda! She quickly opened the barn door and could hardly believe her eyes! This time, Zelda’s whole body totally filled the horse stall! Her little pink ears were poking right through the bars. “Mom! Dad!” called Hannah , “Zelda has grown BIGGER and LONGER and LONGER !” Hannah’s mom, dad, sister and brother came running out to the barn and no one could believe their eyes! They all looked at Zelda from her head to her tail and BLINKED and BLINKED and BLINKED! Hannah’s Dad said he had never ever seen ANYTHING like it! Then he said, “don’t worry Hannah we’ll just put her up in the hayloft.” Hannah and her Dad huffed and puffed and pushed Zelda up the stairs into the very large hay loft. Then Hannah fed and played with Zelda all day, as usual.
The next morning, Hannah jumped out of bed and as she was running to the barn she could see Zelda’s head sticking out one end of the barn and her curly pink tail coming out the other side!!! Hannah could hardly believe her eyes! Zelda had grown right out of the hayloft! “Mom! Dad!” called Hannah, Zelda has grown LONGER and LONGER and LONGER and LONGER! Hannah’s mom, dad, sister and brother came running out to the barn and no one could believe their eyes! They all looked at Zelda from her head to her tail and BLINKED and BLINKED and BLINKED! Hannah’s Dad said “OH MY! I will have to build a slide to get her out of the barn”! Hannah’s Dad got out all his tools and began building the slide for Zelda. When it was done, the whole family got behind Zelda and PUSHED AND PUSHED and PUSHED while Zelda GRUNTEED and GRUNTED and GRUNTED as she squeezed out of the barn, down the slide and out into the pasture. Then Hannah hugged Zelda and played on the slide all day, as usual.
The next day, Hannah ran out to the pasture and once again she could hardly believe her eyes! Zelda had grown once more! This time she had grown over the fence and across the highway! The cars were stopped on both sides of Zelda’s belly honking their horns. “Mom! Dad!” called Hannah, “Zelda has grown LONGER and LONGER and LONGER and LONGER and LONGER!” Hannah’s mom, dad, sister and brother came running out to the highway and no one could believe their eyes! They all looked at Zelda from her head to her tail and BLINKED and BLINKED and BLINKED! Hannah’s Dad stared at Zelda with big eyes and said, “Hannah, what have you been feeding Zelda?” But no one replied, everyone was in such shock. Then Hannah’s Dad said, “call the police to direct traffic, while I call all my friends to build a bridge over Zelda’s body so the traffic can get through”. Hannah hurried to get a tall step -ladder so she could pet Zelda and tell her not to worry. Hannah knew as soon as the bridge was built, her Dad would get help by phoning the vet right away. So, Hannah stayed with Zelda while the police were directing traffic and the bridge was being built. Then Hannah fed Zelda, as usual, and kissed her goodnight.
The next morning, Hannah ran out to the highway and she could hardly believe her eyes! She LOOKED and LOOKED and LOOKED, but Zelda was not there. Hannah ran to the pasture and LOOKED and LOOKED and LOOKED, but Zelda was not there. Then Hannah ran to the hayloft and LOOKED and LOOKED and LOOKED, but Zelda was not there. Then Hannah ran to the horse stall and LOOKED and LOOKED and LOOKED, but Zelda was not there. Then Hannah ran to the Pig pen, but Zelda wasn’t there either. Then Hannah saw Zelda all curled up sound asleep in her little box that Hannah had made for her in the corner of the barn. “Mom! Dad!, Come quick! You won’t believe your eyes! Zelda has SHRUNK and SHRUNK and SHRUNK!” So everyone ran to the barn and Hannah’s mom said, “What do you mean Zelda shrunk? She’s been sleeping in her little box all night.” Hannah starred at Zelda and BLINKED and BLINKED and BLINKED. Then her mom laughed and said “I think you must have had a dream about Zelda.” Then Hannah wakened Zelda and fed and played with her all day, as usual.
